Advantage to rolling skein into a ball before starting a project?
What, if any, advantage is there to putting your yarn into a ball before starting a project??? I don't but my grandmother did and i notice some of the instructors do also. Thanks! Silver wings

I don't do it but one advantage would be you can inspect the yarn for breaks, knots, color problems. It may be especially helpful if you are using yarn that is made by hand, where the quality and size of yarn may differ.

Advantage of rolling yarn includes:
Yarn stays neat while using
Yarn does not tangle easily
Here is an interesting article about rolling (hand winding) your yarn:

I only do it if I tangle it up myself.

I roll my yarn before a project because pull skeins tend to tangle. I use a two pound coffee can with a hole cut in the plastic lid to store my yarn while I work with it. Keeps it from rolling around all over the floor. I can also store my hook in with the yarn when I am done working.

It is so much easier to get addtional yarn for each stitch. But am too lazy to roll it into a ball before starting my project. In the long run I know it makes it so much easier because I used to do it al the time.
