    Garden Gate Afghan question

Hi, I have been working on the Garden Gate afghan and am having trouble getting my rows to come out. I have completed the center and I am working on the Box blocked part. On the first DC of the V stitch, do I count that as first DC of that row? If I am suppose to have 14 stitches between the V stitch do I count the DC end of the V stitch as my 14 th stitch? And the beginning of the V stitch as my first stitch of the 14?
I hope all of that makes sense. This part should be the easy part and for some reason the count wouldn't come out. In all patterns are you to count the first DC part of the V as the first stitch?
Thank you for any help you can give me.
