I use a dowel rod from Michael's to do broomstick lace. It's not as smooth, but you can select whichever size you want for it, which makes the whole process a little more simple IMO.
You could also use a bigger plastic knitting needle, which is what I started with to learn.

    Hi Sherry,
It looks very nice. Is the broomstitch easy to do?

To me, the broomstitch is the easiest stitch to do. You just have to be sure you keep it in multiples of 5 stitches. I pull 5 loops off, hold it on my finger and stitch 5 singles across the top of the loops, pull off 5 more loops and stitch those. It makes a nice big blanket FAST. :-) You can find a video on you tube to make it. Dowel rods do work and you can sand it with a very fine grit sand paper to make it smooth. I found my large knitting needle about 30 years ago when I first learned the stitch. I found another at Hancocks fabrics a few years ago. My needle makes the loops about 1 1/2inches around. You can make the loops as large or small as you choose. Small loops need less loops to pull at a time, the larger loops, 5-6 at a time, make the same stitches as the number of loops pulled off. I made a shawl years ago the had 2-3 inch loops, pulling 6 loops at a time. Pretty, but not so warm, it was just for decoration basically, but it was pretty.

The crotchet crowd on you tube has a nice video instruction for the broomstitch lace stitch. I can't copy the link on my tablet, just go to you tube, look for the crotchet crowd, then
    the stitch.

Handsome boy, handsome blanket. You did a great job. I'm sure he really enjoys the hug from grandma everytime he cuddles in his blanket.
