try putting the yarn in a pillow case and a couple of fabric sheets and put them in the dryer on the low heat for about 15 minutes. It does wonders.

But again I have to disagree. If you look at the picture, there are no spaces in the first 2 rows. The chains that are crocheted in round 3 will be making the "spaces".

If I were doing it, I would double crochet in the regular way to the end of the row, and pretty much the same for row 1. The first "row" is your foundation row plus the 34 chain to start. Row 2 is...
