I use the Russian join and love it for knitting. But for crochet, I usually just lay the old and new yarn on the row to be done and crochet over it. I leave a few inches.

I only use this yarn for dish cloths. It is 100% cotton yarn and looses it's shape when crocheted into garments. I have done some animals. I do not know how they hold up as I gave them away.

I sometimes use a different colored thread as it does not get in the way especially
when using finer yarns for amigurumi. Markers seem to distort the stitch. I never do without a marker. -
