Regarding shrugs and cocoon jackets - I just don't get it. Most of them don't lie correctly at the back, especially the cocoons. They strike me as an invention to keep people crocheting at an easy, basic level instead of learning and progressing toward more fitted garments - which takes effort, knowledge and concentration on the part of both the designer/pattern writer and the crocheter.
If a beginner wants to make an extremely simple, one-piece garment, then a ruana or poncho (traditional garments) makes more sense in how it looks on the person wearing it. However, the shrug/cocoon is a recent, contrived creation.
