There are also several projects where you can "adopt" a soldier who is away from home on active duty and send them packages to keep their spirits up. There was an appeal recently in the UK to provide knitted or crocheted balaclavas for soldiers to wear under their helmets in the winter in places like Afghanistan and for ordinary scarves and gloves in camouflage colours too.
