Fashions are changing all the time, even in crocheting. The popular items that "everyone" is crocheting will change by season, or demand within the communities. Do you have any specific projects in mind?
I guess the internet is your limit...online patterns are often free and numerous so have a go at searching the subject in google or something.
If you are looking for some inspiration from crochet magazines, I would suggest Crochet! or Interweave Crochet to start.
I enjoy Interweave Crochet because it always has something a 'little bit different'.
