Hi everyone:
I have a question that someone may be able to answer.
I have several vintage patterns which as most of you will
know start with size 12 (and sometimes size 14). Besides
using a different size hook is there any other way to reduce
the size of the pattern? Now that I have reached a size
4 these patterns are almost useless to me even though
in largers sizes they are quite lovely. Can anyone
help?

Hello,
I know that patterns can be reduceds. If you are a size 4 and are looking at a size 12 pattern, you can "cut the pattern" down by the number 3 (4 times 3 = 12). I know this can work with simple patterns, but not sure about very difficult and intricate patterns.
So, if the pattern calls for 30 double crochet, you will divide by three giving you 10 double crochet. You have to be consistent throughout the pattern though.
Before I actually started on it with yarn, I would sit down and re-write the pattern, so that you can see if you have any challenges refiguring the steps. This is my personal thought.
Other members will be off and on and can also let us know if their are other options. They can also let me know if I am looking at the reduction properly. I know with crocheted clothing, reductions can be a little more tricky :0)
Hey Barbara does that math equation work for changing yarn to thread? I prefer to work w/ thread and I have a hard time converting from yarn projects....
Captmother! That's great that you have lost all that weight! I agree with Barbara, you should write out the whole pattern to see if there are spots with shaping, etc that may pose a problem! Good luck! Please share with us on how you are doing!
