    Question on The Happy Sunflower

    On the head piece it says to make one each in spring green and honey brown. I started with the spring green color. I did rows 1-8 which is a flat circle. If you're not familiar with the flat circle, it's starts w/6 sc in a magic circle. Row 2 is 2 sc's in each one - 12 sc's total. Row 3 is one sc and then increase in the next stitch. and you keep going up one number. Row 4 is 2 sc's and then increase in the next st. Row 5 would be 3 sc's and then increase in the next st and so on.
    Row 9 is different: 4sc, (inc, sc) 3 times, 18sc, (inc, sc) 3 times, 14sc - 54 How did they come up with 54 stitches? The pattern is a Ravelry PDF download.

    Hi Jean Marie,
    If you look at the increases each row is increasing 6 stitches.
    Row 8: ended with 48 sc.
    Row9: is increasing by 6 like the rest of the rows 48 plus 6= 54
    Row 9 : 4sc, (inc, sc) 3 times, 18sc, (inc, sc) 3 times, 14sc - 54

    On row 9 if I did 4 sc's and increase in the next st and do a sc - that's 7 sts. If I do that 3 times - that's 21 sts. If I say 4x3=12 and increase and then sc - that's 15 sts. 15 plus 3 is 18. So why doesn't it work the way I read it? I come up w/7 sts as I said above.

    The next one on row 9 I came up w/27 sts. 27+14=41 If you already have 18 sts and then (inc and sc) - that's 3 sts 18+3=21 plus the increase, sc 2 more times - that's 6 sts 21 plus 6 = 27 27+14=41

    On the 9th row if I increase on the 4th sc and then add a sc I'll have 6 sc's. 6x3=18 But that's not the way the pattern reads.

    I found this video but she doesn't say how she got the 54 sts on row 9

    I thought the 18 sc's on row 9 was how many sts I'm supposed to have. After the increase, sc 3 times = 13 sts. 13 plus 18 = 31 Then after the inc, sc 3 times again I'll have 40 sts and 40 plus 14 sc's = 54

    Hi Jean Marie,

    I don't know how many stitches you have on row 48 but I was just reading the pattern. Row 8 has 48 stitches(at the end) where did you get 18?
    Row 9 increases by 6 stitches so 48 stitches from row 8 plus the 3sc, 3sc inc=54.
    I didn't read the whole pattern I just looked at what you mentioned in your post about the increase. That is how I thought it would be done. You don't crochet 4 sc plus 3 inc 3 times you only do the 3sc inc twice. Maybe that is where you are getting 7 stitches.

    Oh! I just saw your other post with a video I will look at that and see what it says.

    Let me now if you figure it out.

    Okay, I watched the video and here is what I wrote down what she did.
    Starting on row9: she did {4sc, then 2sc inc, 1 sc, 2 sc inc,
    1 sc, 2sc,1 sc}
    Next she did {18 sc,}
    then repeat the (3 sc inc) {2sc inc, 1 sc, 2 sc inc 1 sc 2 sc inc, 1 sc}
    then (14 stitches,}

    1: is 13 stitches
    2: 18 stitches
    3: is 9 stitches
    4: is 14 stitches
    13+18+9+14=54

    I think that is right.

    R9: 4sc, (inc, sc) 3 times, 18sc, (inc, sc) 3 times, 14sc – 54

    It's 4 sc's, the inc plus the sc is 3 sc's - 4+3=7 and then it's the (inc, sc) 2 more times = 13 sts plus the 18 sc's = 31 sts plus the (inc, sc) 3 times = 31+9=40 sts + 14 = 54 sts

    R10: 4sc, (inc, 2sc) 3 times, 18sc, (inc, 2sc) 3 times, 14 sc – 60

    4 sc's + (inc, 2 sc) 3 times = 4 sc's + 12 sc's =16 sc's +18= 34 sts+(12)=46 sts +14=60 sc sts

    On row 9 it says 18 sc's (after the (inc,sc) 3 times). I thought that the 18 sc's on row 9 was how many sc's I was supposed to have. Watching the video helped. The 18 sc's is what I'm supposed to do, not how many sc's I'm supposed to have.

    Hi again Jean Marie,
    Glad you figured it out. I came up with 54 to start with but looked at the video to watch her count in order to help.
    Post the picture after you make it.

    I started the honey brown color on the head piece. I got to row 9 and ended up with an extra stitch. I have 55 sts instead of 54 sts. I'm going to go to bed.

    I pulled row 9 out and counted the sts on row 8. I had 48 sts but I still got 55 ss on row 9. I must've had the marker in the wrong place because I tried it again and now have the 54 sts on row 9.

    On the head piece the 'honey brown' color I did 2 more rnds after rnd 11 because the spring green yarn is a little bit thicker thus making it a little bit bigger after I had 11 rnds done so now they're about the same size.

    When crocheting the stem on the sunflower I turned it inside out on about rnd 4 cause it's easier to crochet on the outside than on the inside. I ended up with 8 sc's so on the last row I crocheted the 6 sc's and then 2 more sc's - a total of 8 sc's before the ss.

    The pattern says to make 13 petals. I counted the petals on the picture and there are only 12 petals. I guess it's a matter of how many petals fit around the head piece.

    Well, I have 2 petals done. One is smaller than the other one. I did some other ones but took it apart.
