Hi. Thanks for your help so far. It’s a mermaid tail if that helps and it never mentioned chaining 3 (not that I understand that either)! Seems crocheting may not be my thing!

Where is the pattern from? If I can see it I could help better.
The stitches could be slanting to make a stitch pattern. I have done a few that are like that.

Hi Esmecat1,
I looked at the pattern again that you posted on top of page 1. It says to start with a ring. Since you start with a ring or magic circle then you won't have a stitch to go into on rnd. 1.
You might want to try another pattern for a mermaid tail or crochet something else. Maybe you want to practice the different stitches?

Pattern is from a magazine. It was a kit that came with it. I bought it as all I can do on my own is make a scarf!!

I’m sorry I don’t understand. I have made the ring and clearly have to drop a row but I don’t understand the shorthand.

This might help you to understand. The magic ring is just another way to start projects that doesn't gives you the hole at the center.
I hope the link works. If not search YouTube for crochet magic ring ..
I believe that when you see it you will understand everything.
