I took a class to learn these clothing basics so I could grasp the concept of projects like this, and had already been working with simple diagram patterns like flowers, and in fact I just finished my 1st shawl where I used a charted pattern for the whole thing. I had the written instruction in case I needed it for back up, but I was relieved to be able to wok the whole piece with the diagram only.
One issue about most diagram patterns for clothing is that they show the main body stitch pattern in the diagram, but they're not often good about the specifics for area like the sleeves, arm holes, necklines, etc. You kind of have to do trial & error for your size and make notes to remember the methods you used for future pieces. Measuring your body and then calculating stitch qty based on the pattern, in relation to your body size, are good ways to make something fit you when the pattern isn't your size (and it's usually not!).Last edited by SusansSoulShines; 03-12-2016 at 03:46 PM.
