Cute way to add lines of color to a blanket or scarf

This looks so cute! I tried this a while back, on a set of white washcloths. It didn't turn out very well for me. The ends of the colored stripes didn't come out right. And it was very difficult for me to sew in the colored tails without it showing really bad. I love the way it looks in the photo, though. I guess I'd just need someone to sit down with me and show me how to do it right.

Shelly, I have found that if I add anything to a blanket or scarf....I do it before I add the border and include the additions into the borders, so it lays more flat,
