    Hi, Joann. For placemats, I would suggest crochet cotton in the lower count: 3 would be good. it's thicker than the 10, 20, 30 count cotton and you can get it in a variety of colors. The other option is to look at what the pattern is using. I'll take a look in my books. I know I have a #3 size crochet cotton book of patterns. I'll get back to you and let you know.

    Larisa, I know you say you only make doilies. But, don't you ever make rectangular doiles (table runners as an example)?

    Howdie and welcome....Kayemory hit it right w/ #3; you can also do it w/ peaches and cream, people mostly use this for pot holders etc but I think it can make a lovely place mate....hope this helps; happy crocheting.

    she has made bed spreads she showed them to me. they are beautiful
