Hi, I'm new here. Nice to meet you all.
I have a neighbor who has two end tables made in the 1950's and they are tiered tables. The top is flat and round, but there is a pole between the two layers. She wants me to make her doilies for the top and the bottom. Has anyone ever made a doily with a split (along the same lines as as Christmas tree skirt)? Anyone have a pattern, or an idea of how to do this?

Hi. Here are my thoughts on your dilemma. Doilies are crocheted in continuous rounds and the right side is always out. If you were going to crochet a split doily, then you would turn and the doily would then be crocheted in rows with front and back. I think you could crochet such a doily. Be prepared to "practice" a lot to make sure that a front/back pattern has a look you like. I think I would try this with any doily pattern just to see if it works. Also I would skip the first bunch of rows to accomodate the hole for the pole. The number of rows would depend on the diameter of the hole. Check the row gauge on the pattern to establish this number and then start the doily on that row....not row 1. I totally see this doable. Last, you would have the question of the open edge. Thoughts: close the edge with slip stitches, but then it would permanently be part of the table. Velcro? but the finished edge would overlap...buttons on the underside with a button loop on the opposite side that wouldn't show. Hope this helps. Have a great day.
