    Yarn types

Does anyone have an easy way to tell one type of yarn from another. I mean in terms of sport weight versus worsted weight, etc.

I pick up most of my yarn at thrift stores and yard sales. Much of it without labels. There are so many different textures and mixes today that "feel" alone doesn't tell me all I need to know.

    Suggestions appreciated.

    Hello,

When looking at packaging this may be helpful for you:

I would say if the package is not marked, you would have to learn from experience. I wonder if you could keep some scraps of different types of yarns with you which are labeled to help you make the determination?

Soon, we will have some other replies as well. Thanks for your patience!

Trolling this site I found someone had posted a knit gauge/tension page and it's helpful in determining how thick the yarn is. I have begun to cut samples and unravel so I can count the plys. I plan to make a chart, too. I just picked up a bagful of yarn at the local Goodwill. I have plenty of opportunity to figure out plys (lol).
