    Foundation Stitches

Do you find sometimes that your starting chains (or sometimes called foundation chains) are too tight and the bottom of your project puckers or too loose and it flares all over the place? Have you heard of foundation single crochet stitches? You make the chain and the first row of single crochet stitches at the same time and end up with a beautifully flexible edge that isn't too taut. And if you look at it from the top, it looks just like a row of stitches with the typical braided chain look we crocheters love.
My friend Marty Miller teaches a class on how to make these foundation single crochet stitches, and also foundation hdc and foundation dc, and a few more. It's a great class and you can find it here: http://www.craftsy.com/ext/CharlesVoth_4809_CP

    Hi, Charles,

I had so much fun -NOT- with foundation chains! They would either be too tight and therefore ugly to work with, or too loose, very much like you describe too loose. The foundation is such a crucial part of any pattern and can be easily discouraging. So I decided I needed to learn and hopefully become adept at the single crochet foundation stitches. However, never did get going with the half doubles or the doubles. So even though I could do the singles I still have to get out the directions...because I can't keep them in my mind so they could just flow off my hook!

Thanks for telling us about Marty Miller's class! Definitely sounds worthy of checking it out!

I love using the foundation chain. I just recently started using it. It makes my finished project look even and gives it a little stretch on both the first and last rows.

    Old dogs, new tricks..

I have been crocheting for over 45 years, and only within the last year have I discovered the foundation single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet foundation chain. I have also discovered the no gap turning chain. Unbelievable, but it goes to show that even this old dog can learn new tricks! My suggestion is to just go to youtube and request videos on Foundation crochet chains and no gap turning chains. There are so many good ones, it would be hard for me to recommend anyone in particular. Well, Christmas is coming; gotta get back to work on the Red Heart 'True Friend Shawl I'm working on, using Bernat satin sport yarn with a G hook. The Crochet Dude, Drew Emborsky came up with a winner with this pattern, since it can be done with virtually any size yarn hook, etc.

I have been crocheting since I was five and I'm a lot older now, but I can't figure out where to put my hook for the single foundation chain, but I had no problem with the half double foundation chain. I guess I will try it more when the winter sales are over. I'm crocheting as fast as I can, when I'm not on here or Facebook! hahah Kate
