Question What does this mean in crochet terms: dc in next 4 stitches 0 (1,0,1,0,1)

I saw a pattern with this listed in the instructions, dc in next 4 stitches 0 (1,0,1,0,1). What exactly does it mean?

    Hello Vee,

When a pattern uses parantheses now days, it means to work the instructions given as many times as indicated (1,0,1,0). Here is a useful article on different notations within crochet instruction beyond general abbreviations:

Crochet Geek - Free Instructions and Patterns: Crochet Symbols- Brackets, Parenthesis, Asterisk

    I hope this helps you!

Here is another useful resource when using parenthesis, brackets, and braces:

Ok, that was somewhat helpful but I just need to know what the numbers mean in this particular patterns brackets (1,0,1,0,1). To me it looks like binary code. I just want to be clear on it.

Ok, that was somewhat helpful but I just need to know what the numbers mean in this particular patterns brackets (1,0,1,0,1). To me it looks like binary code. I just want to be clear on it.

    ----------------------------------------------------

This pattern has been written for 6 different sizes in one pattern.

I'm going to call the sizes #1, #2, #3,#4, #5 and #6 for simplicity's sake. For size #1, you would ignore anything in the brackets throughout the pattern. For Size #2, you would be following the instructions as written but substituting the 1st number in the bracket for what was written, and so on.

the pattern would actually be written "dc in next 4 stitches 0 (1,0,1,0,1) times"

So this would read the following for the various sizes:

size #1 - dc in next 4 stitches 0 times (Ie don't do anything)
size #2 - dc in next 4 stitches 1 time
size #3 - dc in next 4 stitches 0 times
Size #4 - dc in next 4 stitches 1 time
size #5 - dc in next 4 stitches 0 times
size #6 - dc in next 4 stitches 1 time

You will quite often see this notation when making garments. The pattern will be written for a sweater with bust size 32 with additional instructions for bust (34, 36, 38, 40, 42) for example.

Does this explain it any better?

    Thanks Crochet Gal,

I have not created any patterns with this specific notation, but I thought this is what it meant. I did not want to say anything wrong. Your help is greatly appreciated!
